A Trustworthy Parenting Book: The Gospel-Centered Parent

by | Oct 30, 2017 | Book Reviews, Parenting

Perhaps the most frequently asked question counselors receive from moms is, “Which parenting book would you recommend for me?” While there are a host of solid parenting books available, this book by Miller, Harrell, and Klumpenhower is Biblical and applicable to a broad range of readers – no matter how old your children are or how many mistakes you’ve already made.

Though this book is part of a “Gospel-Centered” book series and is also presented in a group study format, it is perfectly acceptable to read it straight through individually as well.

This book will help you determine IF you need to:

  • Turn trust away from yourself and onto the Heavenly Father
  • Recognize fear in your parenting approach
  • Identify any ways your theology is not translating into your techniques
  • Scan your behaviors to find the ones that are sending the wrong messages
  • Deepen gratitude for how much you personally need the Savior
  • Acknowledge the messiness of your parenting due to your own sins
  • Increase the amount of time you are spending confessing & repenting
  • Grow in intimacy with the Lord more than zoning in on your kids
  • Pray with abandon and purity
  • Revise your perspective and expectations about your children and their actions
  • Reconsider the order of when you turn to the Lord and when you respond to your children
  • Connect with the Holy Spirit before attempting to counsel your teens
  • Spend time together building His kingdom
  • Practice a rich display of suffering in front of and with your family
  • Fight with God’s armor the spiritual battles taking place in your circumstances
  • Persevere with hope on a daily basis and for the long haul

Why do you look at the speck in your (child’s) eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? (Mt. 7:3)
